We know and understand how devastating and crippling an illness Alzheimer’s can be. It is with this in mind that Fiona and her Jack Russell Popeye decided to go on a walk and raise money to support those affected by Alzheimer's.
Why are Fiona and Popeye doing A Memorial Walk?
A Memory Walk is a fun and sponsored walk to raise money to support research into Dementia and those affected by the illness. Fiona decided to do the walk after first hearing about it on the radio as well as seeing others take part within the company.
Fiona as part of our team has seen first-hand the devastating effects the disease has on clients. Alzheimer’s does not have a cure and will take all our combined efforts to tackle and overcome this illness. Fiona has risen to this challenge and wanted to go the extra mile and help raise some money for such an important cause.
Why it was important to Fiona to go on a Memory Walk
For Fiona, the walk had a very special significance and importance in that she is was doing the walk for her father who had early-onset Alzheimer’s before sadly passing. Fiona’s father loved the outdoors, including walks and hikes with the family. Fiona felt this would be a fitting tribute to her Father and also a good way of raising money to combat Alzheimer’s and help those affected by the illness. Fiona’s efforts which were already commendable and remarkable enough also extended to raising money to support our current clients including a special dedication to Kath.
“It feels good to be involved with something that can ultimately make a big change to people. It’s good to know that although it’s just me and Popeye doing a walk together there are so many others working for the same goal’”
How Fiona and Popeye got on the walk
When Fiona approached us with her idea for going the extra mile we were delighted to help and support Fiona in any way we could. Fiona managed to allocate time each week to help in her preparations for the walk.
In advance of the walk on the 19th of March, Fiona undertook a series of walks, each between 2-3 miles as a way of getting ready for her challenge. The main walk which was on a Friday covered a distance of 8 miles!
Well done Fiona and Popeye!
For Fiona, the walk was even more poignant as she thought of her father along the route. We must also not forget Popeye in all this equation, Fiona’s Jack Russell. At 15 years old, we think Popeye is a real trooper and hero!
How much did Fiona and Popeye raise?
Fiona and Popeye managed to raise £145 after smashing their initial target of a £100.
We at the Great Care Company would just like to say a fantastic well done to Fiona and Popeye for smashing through their target.
How you can get involved
There are a lot of things you and I can do to help raise money for those affected by Alzheimer’s. All it takes is will and action on our part. Fiona is a magnificent example of how an individual can contribute to the fight against Alzheimer’s by deciding to go the extra mile.
