What Is Huntington’s Disease?

Huntington’s Disease is a rare genetic disease that causes a progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. The disease will cause restrictions in movement, psychiatric and personality disorders as well as cognitive issues.

What ages are affected by Huntington’s Disease?

Symptoms can develop at any time and usually first appear in people in their 30s and 40s. It can affect younger people (before the age of 20) though this is classed as ‘juvenile Huntington’s Disease’, which can display different symptoms and progress faster.

Causes:

Huntington’s disease is caused by a single defective gene. This gene is on chromosome 4, one of 23 chromosomes that carry a human’s entire genetic code. It is a genetic disease and the defect can be passed from parent to child. Though the exact cause is understood, there is currently no known cure for the condition.

Symptoms:

  • The symptoms of Huntington’s disease can be physical, psychiatric and cognitive.
  • Muscles become rigid and hard to control.
  • Involuntary movements and writhing.
  • Poor balance and posture.
  • Difficulty with speech and swallowing.
  • An inability to ‘find’ certain words.
  • Abnormal eye movements.
  • Obsessive, possessive behaviour or actions.
  • A lack of awareness of actions, behaviours or consequences.
  • Slowness in thought processes and taking in new information.
  • Tiredness, loss of energy and insomnia.
  • Being irritable, angry, sad and withdrawn.
  • Depression and social withdrawal.

Changes in personality:

One aspect that can be especially difficult for loved ones is the changes in the temperament of Huntington’s patients. It can make people irritable, frustrated, angry, stubborn and often violent. Even if they had no previous history of being that way before. It’s one area where having physical and emotional support in the form of a home can be a real difference-maker.

Types of Huntington’s Disease

Adult-onset Huntington’s disease: The most common form, usually showing symptoms in the 30s to 40s.

Juvenile Huntington’s disease: A rarer form that affects children and teenagers.

There is currently no cure for Huntington’s disease, however, medication and ongoing testing and examinations can lessen the symptoms of movement restriction and aid with the psychiatric and cognitive disorders associated with the condition.

Prescription drugs will likely be applied to control movement: to free up rigid muscles or control involuntary movements or jerking.

Antipsychotic drugs may also be prescribed to control the impulses, urges and mood swings that can be associated with the disease.

Therapies can be applied to improve certain aspects that are affected by Huntington’s disease.

These may include a psychologist or psychotherapist for behaviour issues. A speech therapist may assist with speaking, eating and swallowing. Physical therapists can help develop safe exercises to enhance strength and physical control and occupational therapists may find ways to make everyday living a little easier through the use of tools or devices in the home.
