What Is A Stroke?

Strokes occur when the blood supply to the brain is cut off. There can be numerous causes for this but the most important thing to remember is that you need to take action as soon as possible. This is an urgent medical emergency and the quicker the person is treated, the less long-term damage is likely to happen.

If you see any of the following symptoms, call 999 immediately:

  • Face: May drop or the person is unable to smile.
  • Arms: It may be difficult to lift both arms and may experience weakness/numbness
  • Speech: Speech may be slurred or the person may be unable to talk or understand.
  • Time: Dial 999 the moment any of these symptoms are recognised.

The two main causes of a stroke:

Ischaemic: This accounts for about 85% of all strokes and is due to a blood clot restricting blood supply to the brain.

Haemorrhagic: A weakened blood vessel supplying the brain bursts.

There is a third related condition called a TIAT (Transient ischaemic attack) which is caused by a temporary interruption of the blood supply to the brain. Often known as a “mini-stroke” it can last for a few minutes or persist for up to 24 hours.

In all cases, immediate action should be taken to minimise long-term damage.

What You Should Expect From After-Stroke Home Carers

The great thing about stoke aftercare in your home is that you can remain in comfortable, familiar surroundings, whilst getting the care you and your family need to get back on your feet.

The Great Care Company specialises in providing the very best care from the very best carers, in the place you will feel most comfortable: your own home.

We tailor the service we provide to suit your needs exactly, making it convenient and affordable, without compromising on any aspect of your day-to-day life.

A stroke or TIA attack can make quite an impact on an individual but we understand that it will affect your loved ones. Our service is here to provide support physically and emotionally to those who need it when they need the help.

We’ll take care of the basics, from shopping, cooking and cleaning to the more complex things like physical therapy, rehabilitation exercises and managing medicines. Anything you could use assistance with.

You may need some time to think about whether you want to seek external help and we completely understand that. Please know that expert carers, who will value you and your family, are just a phone call away. Feel free to get in touch with our friendly team and ask any questions you may have.

What Can After-Stroke Home Care Include?

Bathroom Help & Personal Hygiene

If going to the toilet and personal grooming have become difficult, we can help. We understand it can be traumatic having a loved one conduct these duties with you, so allow us to assist with dignity and respectfulness.

Mobility & Physiotherapy

Our carers are extensively trained and experienced to help with post-stroke rehabilitation and physiotherapy. We’ll work with your health care specialists to ensure all recommended physical needs are met.

Ongoing Medication & Treatments

We’ll make sure that medication is taken on time and in the correct amount, along with prescription pickups and liaising with your healthcare advisers to make sure all medical advice is adhered to.

Cooking, Meal Plans & Cleaning Up

We’ll make sure that you and your family are eating properly, with a healthy, balanced diet. We can aid with meal plans, restricted food types, feeding, shopping and even washing up when you are finished.

Adapting & Re-Learning

Recovering from a stroke is a process. It can mean learning old skills or learning new ways of doing things. Our carers provide support physically and emotionally to make you feel more independent and able.

Laundry & Bedding

Changing bed sheets, washing clothes and doing the ironing isn’t a fun job at the best of times. If it has become more difficult as a result of a stroke, then we can assist with these tasks.

Pet Care & Animal Support

Unlike care homes, we fully support and help look after your furry friends. If you’d like, we can feed them, clean up after them and take them for walkies. We love pets just as much as you do.

Expert, Qualified Staff

We handpick and train carers not simply because we want them to be competent to aid our clients but we want that little bit extra. By matching carers to clients, we form a bond that goes beyond basic support.

What makes us different from other providers:

We work across Lincolnshire and Yorkshire to provide unparalleled levels of care. Here’s why we are different:
  • We believe that carers should be an extension of your family and support network. This is why we go to great lengths to pick carers who suit your needs and personality.

  • The Great Care Company is a five-star rated service that regularly wins awards and accolades for being a leader in the care industry.

  • We cater for long and short-term care needs.

  • We train our staff extensively. Rest assured that if any additional training is required for specialist conditions, this is always conducted at the cost of our company, not those in our care.

  • We do not place any restrictions on your personal life. Unlike care homes, visits from loved ones, private time and access to pets are not affected by the service we offer.

  • Our company values and carers understand the need for mental and emotional support. It’s every bit as important as physical needs, if not more so.

  • If you have looked at other options like care homes, you will likely find our tailored care service to be a very affordable option. You only pay for the services you need, on the days and hours you want them.

  • As a company, we always go the extra mile with our staff and those in our care to ensure everyone is happy and fulfilled.

  • We’re incredibly proud of every member of the team. Our extensive process of understanding each and every person who works for us means we can suit carers to clients whilst making sure that everyone feels valued.

  • Unlike care homes, we understand the importance of seeing regular, familiar faces. We want you to have the same, consistent carers as much as possible. We may even provide an additional carer (at no extra cost to you) for training so we’re happy that you have cover in the event of holidays or sickness.

  • Our team is here to enhance your life and make things easier. We want to help with minimum disruption to your personal life.

The Great Care Company was founded with a very simple philosophy in mind: To provide the levels of care that we would hope our own loved ones would receive.

Our aim, in everything we do, is to be the very best in the care industry without any compromise for those in our care or our staff.
