What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?

People often label Alzheimer’s Disease as Dementia. Dementia is, in fact, a general term that shares many of the same symptoms as Alzheimer’s.

It describes any condition which causes a decline in a person’s mental ability and makes daily life challenging.

Alzheimer’s is a specific brain disease that affects the brain’s part associated with learning. Knowing the difference and understanding how to care for it will give caregivers and family members a much better chance of taking the correct action and allowing the person affected to be treated correctly.

What are the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease?

Lapses or changes in a person’s memory, reasoning skills, and thinking will be affected, leading to personality changes.

What are the late-stage symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease and the late stages can lead to quite severe symptoms. Patients can lose the ability to communicate, control movement or respond to the environment around them.

They may still say the occasional word or phrase but this may be labored and not related to external stimuli or conversations being had with them.

What are the 7 stages of Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s is progressive and can be hard to spot in the early stages, with clearer symptoms presenting themselves over time:

  1. Normal behavior
(usually only identifiable via a PET scan.)
  2. Mild changes:
this can start with losing things and forgetting words. It is often confused for ageing, in general.
  3. Subtle decline:
This may include forgetting names, an inability to plan and organise, forgetting what they have just read or asking repetitive questions.
  4. Obvious decline:
A person may forget their own details, not understand dates, times or seasons, struggle with the technology they used to understand, find conversations difficult, and tasks like cooking and cleaning will be difficult along with decision making.
  5. Mild to severe decline:
This stage usually causes a person to lose track of where they are, the time of day and even what time of year it is. They may dress for the incorrect season, and forget their personal details or life history. They will still be able to tell stories though not all the facts will be accurate.
  6. Severe:
Care can become more challenging at this stage as the person may remember faces but forget names or mix relatives up, mistaking them for someone else.
They may think they are still in an old job or live in an old home.
Assistance will often be required with going to the bathroom, feeding, getting dressed and tasks around the home.
Secondary health issues can arise that require a higher level of care.
  7. Very Severe Symptoms:
Late-stage Alzheimer’s will affect abilities like walking, movement, eating and communicating when they are full or thirsty.
Families can often find this very challenging and will almost always require professional assistance with care. Home care may not always be the best answer for this stage though The Great Care Company can provide around-the-clock assistance should it be required.
How long does Alzheimer’s last?

The age of the person affected will have a bearing on their life expectancy. For most people, Alzheimer’s Disease can last for 8 to 10 years with late-stage dementia typically being 1 to 2 years.

People have been known to live with the condition for up to 15 and even 20 years though these are quite rare cases.

What Is Involved In Alzheimer’s Home Care?

The particular stage of Alzheimer’s will dictate the level of care required. As a person’s needs escalate, so too should the level of support. Some of the assistance you should expect might be:

  • Physical and emotional support for the person affected and their loved ones.
  • Assistance with tasks around the home.
  • Preparing clothes for the day ahead.
  • Companionship and support.
  • Help with leaving the home, shopping and attending social situations.
  • Medication management.
  • Colostomy & catheter care
  • An understanding of secondary health conditions associated with late-stage Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Observations of changes in a person’s abilities and the need to change treatment as appropriate.
  • Keeping the person comfortable.
  • Assistance with personal hygiene.
  • Ensuring bedding is fresh and clothing is clean.
  • Meal planning & preparation with food appropriate to the stage.
  • Feeding and hydration.
  • Working with medical experts to ensure the care is tailored to the person and the stage of Alzheimer’s they are experiencing.
Is Home Care The Best Option?

Home is the place we feel most secure and familiar with.

Being around the people, pets and things that a person loves can be very beneficial to an Alzheimer’s patient’s well-being and may encourage them to feel more empowered.

Providing the level of care and support is there, home care is a perfect solution for being with your loved one for as long as possible and helping them to get the most out of life in a place they will feel most comfortable.

Caring for people with Alzheimer’s can be very challenging, especially for loved ones. As the disease progresses, the needs of the person will change and the level of care has to adapt with it.

Our home carers come with a wealth of experience and understanding. Not just of the condition but the physical, mental and emotional needs of those with the disease. What Services Does Elderly Home Care Provide?

Personal Hygiene

Being clean is something that really matters to our mental and physical well-being. It can, however, be a difficult act for a loved one, especially with family members. Our carers respect the dignity and privacy of those in their care and provide a hygiene routine to suit your needs.

Keeping Routines

Alzheimer’s can make basic things more challenging, especially social events or keeping time and going out. We’ll assist with the things that may have become a struggle but will be a real benefit and boost of confidence for those affected by Alzheimer’s.

Therapies & Treatments

Depending on the specific stage that your loved one is at, we provide adaptable care that allows for some change. If you need to increase the hours or services, we offer the flexibility to do this without compromising on the treatment your loved ones receive.

Food & Hydration

In the early days, it may simply be a case of aiding with shopping, providing meal plans or helping with the cooking. As the situation changes, we can too. We’ll help with feeding and monitoring the amounts of food and drink being consumed.

Complete Care As Required

Unlike care homes, we put you in control of the services you need, the days you want us there and the times you need us. This allows us to be a much more alternative whilst providing a complete service, built from the ground up to suit you.

Home-Maker Services

Jobs around the home can seem less important and take a back seat when compared with care. Our carers can assist with everything from laundry and tidying to bed changes and vacuuming. We’ll make sure the house is clean, tidy and safe for you and your loved ones.

Not Putting Restrictions In Place

Care homes enforce a regimented lifestyle that may not suit everyone. This can be alarming and disorientating for people with Alzheimer’s. Our care packages cause minimum disruption to your daily routines and allow you to see your loved ones when you want, stay in your home and even keep access to your pets.

Encouragement and Companionship

We believe people are at their best when they feel empowered, encouraged and independent. We provide the care required whilst being there on the good and bad days. We’re here to talk about your emotional needs and give you the boost you need to keep being the best version of yourself.

  • As a company, we work with a wide array of people who require care. We cater for almost any illness, disease or condition when it comes to home care. This has allowed us to accumulate a lot of experience when it comes to providing the correct and proper care for any given situation. We know there is no “one size fits all” approach to looking after people.

  • We provide consistent, familiar care staff so you and your loved ones feel comfortable and reassured. Care homes will generally have a large staff turnover and shift workers whilst we understand that it can be disorientating and alarming for people living with Alzheimer’s. So we do things differently.

  • The Great Care Company values respect, honesty and dignity. We provide carers who understand these values and represent us, as a company in a way that makes us proud. We’re in your home and we want you to feel as comfortable and reassured by the service and carers we provide as possible.

Most importantly, The Great Care Company was founded on the belief that caregivers should provide the levels of service that we’d expect for our own loved ones. This simple philosophy drives everything we do and makes us strive to be the very best our industry has to offer.
