What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is the inflammation of a person’s joints. It is extremely common and can affect people of all ages, often as a lifelong condition. There are several types of arthritis that are more common in older people though it can also result from autoimmune diseases, infections, or broken bones.

The most common types of arthritis are:

Osteoarthritis:

This degenerative form of arthritis occurs in older people (usually over 50) as a result of eroded cartridge lining. It can be extremely painful the bones of a joint can rub together causing pain, stiffness and loss of mobility in the affected joints. This type of wear and tear can result in chronic pain for the sufferer.

Rheumatoid Arthritis:

This is classed as a chronic disease and differs from Osteoarthritis because it results from inflammation of the joints rather than cartilage degradation.
Though joints do not break down, they will cause constant pain and long-term damage which can result in loss of functionality and potential disabilities.
Rheumatoid Arthritis can affect other parts of the body such as organs and tissue. It will require medication and ongoing treatment to make the condition manageable.

Juvenile Arthritis:

We refer to arthritis in those under 18 years of age as “Juvenile arthritis” which is commonly the swelling of the joints for more than 6 weeks or over.

It can affect children and teenagers but home carers can assist with the management of the condition.

Managing Arthritis:

There are no 100% reliable cures for arthritis but there are many ways that home carers can assist and make sure the condition is properly managed and the patient is comfortable. You can have an exceptional quality of life by simply making a few lifestyle changes and managing prescriptions to alleviate pain and swelling. Our carers can assist with every step to ensure you’re as comfortable and active as possible.
