What Is COPD?
COPD can include emphysema (damaged air sacs within the lungs) and chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the airways) which tend to affect adults of middle age or older. People often do not realise they have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease until it becomes quite progressive and makes normal activities difficult. It is estimated that 9 out of 10 cases of COPD are the long-term results of smoking though it can also be genetic or a result of sustained exposure to dangerous fumes or dust. An estimated 3 million people in the UK may have COPD with most cases going undiagnosed.
Typical symptoms of COPD:
- Breathlessness – Especially during activities like climbing stairs or physical activity.
- A long-term chesty cough that produces phlegm.
- Re-occurring chest infections.
- Wheezing whilst breathing
Flare-ups when left untreated
Treatments for COPD:
Although the damage caused by COPD will always affect the lungs you can try giving up smoking, using prescribed inhalers and medicines or trying pulmonary rehabilitation, which is something our home carers can assist with.
