High-dependency care covers any form of care which includes recovery from an illness or operation and ongoing care for chronic conditions where specialised, trained carers are needed. Patients with high-dependency needs often require around-the-clock care from suitable people who have a good understanding of the medical condition, any equipment being used and the ability to perform vital observations that will ensure the patient’s safety.

Typically, this type of care would not cover people in critical conditions and the length of time required for the care will vary from patient to patient. Chronic illnesses may require ongoing around-the-clock care whilst recovery from an operation, accident or illness may only necessitate assistance for set times and specific actions.
