About Roy and Diane

Roy and Diane’s home care story started 24 years ago.

Roy and Diane’s home care story started 24 years ago. They bumped into each other while hanging out with their friends at various pubs on Friday nights. After dating for six months, they became a couple. Roy was an engineer working in Skegness, and Diane was a careers advisor for offenders working in an open prison.

Before Roy’s condition progressed, they enjoyed travelling all over Lincolnshire and ending their explorations at a village pub, where they first met. Even though Roy’s mobility was restricted due to his condition, they still enjoyed getting out and about. They walk their two dogs and socialize with friends and family. Roy always makes time to go out for his weekly coffee, and Diane attends her Zumba class.

Our Day with Roy and Diane

We visited Roy and Diane at their home, where Roy receives home care from our team.

In 1999, Roy was diagnosed with MS. He was still able to work for about 16 years after his diagnosis because he could still walk and use his arms. Roy and Diane reminisced about their work and relationship history. Roy enjoyed teaching and found it satisfying when people passed their exams. However, Roy’s condition became progressive, and he could no longer work at all. He could only use one hand.

Why they prefer home care

We talked with the couple about their experience with our home care service and how they found The Great Care Company.

Diane explained that we provided an initial consultation and asked for their requirements, and she has been pleased with the service we have provided.

Having a care service at home has helped Roy to continue living his life on his terms. He tries to do as much as he can, but on days when he needs more assistance, he knows our team is there to help him. Diane mentioned that the home care assistants…

Make me feel really quite at ease because nothing too much trouble. I can go out and leave them with Roy as they know what his needs are and I have peace of mind knowing that when they leave he’s ok’.

Rosemary’s Health Care Story

Before moving to Louth, Rosemary used to run boarding kennels and take care of different kinds of animals.

She had a wonderful life, full of activities that she enjoyed sharing with her loving husband and son Andrew. However, as she grew older, she found it increasingly difficult to continue with those activities and her health situation at home became such that she required care beyond what her family could provide.

Enter The Great Care Company

Andrew, Rosemary’s son, reached out to The Great Care Company as his mother was struggling to look after herself.

They were exploring ways to help her, including moving her to a nursing home. However, Rosemary was insistent on staying in her own home with her cherished memories, particularly those she shared with her late husband.

In the end, Rosemary and Andrew decided to opt for home health care and reached out to the award-winning team at The Great Care Company.

Why Rosemary Chose Home Health Care

For Rosemary, staying close to her cherished memories was crucial.

As she had lived in the same house for many years. Her husband had passed away, but his memories were still with her, and leaving them behind was not an option.

This is a common situation that many older people face, and The Great Care Company is proud to provide a solution. Home health care enables people with healthcare needs to stay in the homes they love so much.

What We Do For Rosemary

Rosemary now receives visits from The Great Care Company team three times a day, and she speaks very highly of her carers.

She says that they would do anything for her and have even become great friends. While The Great Care Company team provides Rosemary with the usual assistance with cooking, cleaning, and medication, they also offer her much more: companionship and the ability to stay in her own home so she can maintain her independence.

For older people, taking the time to have a chat or drink a cup of tea with them can make a significant difference and provide them with meaningful interactions that are not solely based on their care needs.

What Rosemary Thinks Of Our Home Health Care Team

Rosemary is incredibly satisfied with the care and support she receives from The Great Care Company. She had this to say about our team:

The Care Company are wonderful. The carers would do anything for you… I don’t think I’ve ever met such a lovely number of carers like that before. I would advise anybody, I really mean it, go to The Great Care Company.

Don and Sylvia’s Story

As we began our discussion, it became clear that Don’s story is one of unwavering love and support.

Not only is he a loving caregiver to Sylvia, but he is also a highly skilled chemical engineer and a cherished grandfather.

Their love story began in the most enchanting way, as Don first laid eyes on Sylvia while she was working at a charming delicatessen. After his long days at work, he would often visit the deli to grab a sandwich, and little did he know that this would be the start of their beautiful journey together. Despite the challenges that life threw their way, including Don’s work taking him to Qatar, their love persevered. Leading them to tie the knot in a heartwarming ceremony surrounded by their loved ones in Australia back in 2008. Today, Don and Sylvia find solace and happiness in each other’s company in the peaceful countryside of Lincolnshire.

Our Day With Don

To truly understand the impact of our home care service on Don and Sylvia’s lives, we visited them to hear his home care story.

Our intention was not only to gather their thoughts on our team and the service we provide but also to get to know them better as individuals. Don graciously opened up about the challenges they faced when Sylvia was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He recounted how the initial diagnosis came three years after they met, and the rapid decline in Sylvia’s health left them uncertain of what the future held. However, with the incredible support from the NHS and palliative care, they were able to navigate through this difficult period together.

Don also shared with us the invaluable care provision that was put in place for Sylvia when she first returned home from the hospital. Both Marie Curie and St Barnabas provided exceptional support, which played a significant role in Sylvia’s journey towards regaining mobility. As we delved deeper into their life with Parkinson’s, it became evident that receiving home care has allowed Don and Sylvia to create countless cherished memories. Don reminisced about one particular outing where they chased the sunset together, exploring the picturesque Wolds, enjoying a picnic, and returning home with hearts full of joy. It was a truly beautiful moment for them.

Why Don prefer’s home care

When discussing why Don prefers home care, we were moved by his honesty and vulnerability.

He candidly shared the challenges he faces when it comes to dressing Sylvia in the morning. For him, it is a complete nightmare, but the incredible care team has made all the difference. Don fondly described how each morning feels like a fashion parade, with Sylvia choosing her outfit for the day, and the carers bringing a smile to her face.

The level of care they receive has not only helped Sylvia regain some semblance of normalcy but has also given her a life that extends beyond the confines of their bedroom.

About Sylvia Home Health care story

Sylvia is an inspiring individual who is bravely facing the daily challenges of Parkinson’s with unwavering support and love from her husband, Don.

The couple first met at a busy delicatessen where Sylvia worked, and although it took some effort, Don finally won Sylvia’s heart. They now happily celebrate ten years of marriage in the picturesque countryside of Lincolnshire. Despite the impact of Parkinson’s on their lives, they continue to explore the beautiful countryside and charming market towns, enjoying life’s little pleasures.

Sylvia, Don and carer sharing home health care stories

Our Day with Sylvia:

We had the privilege of visiting their charming countryside home and bringing Sylvia her favourite indulgence, liquorice allsorts.

Don greeted us warmly at the door and invited us into their cosy abode where we enjoyed a delightful conversation over a steaming cup of tea where Syliva shared her home health care story. During this heartwarming chat, Sylvia opened up about her diagnosis and the obstacles she has faced. She spent some time in the hospital, reaching a point where she couldn’t even get out of bed on her own.

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, she realized she needed assistance from carers. After spending three months in the hospital, she returned home feeling helpless and frustrated. Without the help of carers and Don, she wouldn’t be able to manage.

Sylvia spoke highly of the Home Care Assistants who visit her. “They are incredibly helpful and friendly individuals who bring joy into my life“.  Sylvia eagerly awaits their visits as they provide an opportunity for lively conversations and are always willing to lend a helping hand. They assist her with dressing, getting into bed, and providing company.

Why Sylvia Prefers
Home Care

After spending a significant amount of time in the hospital due to Parkinson’s, Sylvia has come to the conclusion that home care is the ideal solution for her.

It allows her to cherish precious moments in the comfort of her own home, alongside her devoted husband Don. Don takes care of her, taking her out, cooking for her, doing her laundry, and even assisting her with her medication.

While Sylvia appreciates the luxurious comforts she still enjoys at home, she especially values the presence of her friends who continue to visit her. In her eyes, this surpasses the experience of a care home, as she can freely express herself and engage in activities she enjoys. The visits from her friends are a significant difference to her day.

It does make a big difference. It’s nice to see the faces you know every day, always cheerful and I look forward to them coming.
